The ending is the part I'll be thinking about. You could have closed on the hotel, or on the dream where you pass each other walking in opposite directions, and instead it's an arm waved west at some buildings and somewhere over there. Refusing the bigger ending is what makes it land. The second person does the same work all the way through: writing it to him rather than about him puts the reader just behind your shoulder rather than out front being told a story. Sorry about your friend.
